  • General

    Location: Oakwood Heritage Hospital (Taylor)
    Instructor: Drs. Morawa or Krugel, or other Orthopaedic Surgeon as assigned.

    Objectives: Available to Year 3 & 4. The student will become an active member of the Orthopaedic Surgery team within Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center, Oakwood Heritage Hospital, and outpatient clinics. The student will acquire an understanding of pathological processes relevant to Orthopaedic Surgery. These will include but are not limited to: degenerative arthritis of joints, primary and metastatic tumors of the skeletal system, fracture management, and metabolic response to trauma. He/she will develop the necessary skills to conduct preoperative evaluations and provide postoperative care. He/she will learn surgical approach and technique.

    Methods: Private Practice/Operating Room/Ward Rounds

  • Sports Medicine

    Location: Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center (Dearborn) and Oakwood Heritage Hospital (Taylor)
    Instructor: Drs. Milia or Teitge

    Objectives:
    Available to Year 3 & 4. Students will learn about athletes who have musculoskeletal problems; learn about assessments of the athletes and care of injuries on the field; become familiar with common sport injuries of the knee (meniscus, anterior and posterior cruciate ligament), shoulder and ankle.

  • Hand

    Location: Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center (Dearborn) or St. John Hospital and Medical Center (Detroit)
    Instructor: Drs. Singer or Dietz

    Objectives:
    Available to Year 3 & 4. Students will learn about the care of patients with upper extremity disorders; develop physical exam skills for detailed upper extremity anatomy and surgery problems of the upper extremity; become familiar with common upper extremity complaints such as carpal tunnel syndrome, other compressive neuropathies, tendon injuries, common hand fractures, arthritis of the hand, and common congenital deformities.

  • Trauma

    Location: Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center (Dearborn), Oakwood Heritage Hospital (Taylor), St. John Hospital and Medical Center (Detroit)
    Instructor: Drs. Faulkner, Perry, or Schoch

    Objectives:
    Students must have passed Year 3 surgery. Emphasis on acute fractures, problem fractures or complications of fracture care; clinical and operative experience with the care of fracture patients; exposure to the acute treatment of poly-trauma patients as well as more common fracture to the upper and lower extremity. Students will be expected to demonstrate proper splint placement, wound closure technique and physical exam fractures.

  • Foot and Ankle

    Location: Wayne State University

    Objectives: Students will be involved in current Orthopaedic Surgery/Biomechanics research.

    Methods: Laboratory

  • General/Trauma

    Location: VA Hospital (Detroit)
    Instructor: Drs. Omari or Pierre-Jacques

    Objectives:
    Available to Year 3 & 4, students must have passed Year 3 surgery. The student will acquire an understanding of pathological processes relevant to Orthopaedic Surgery.
